Face-to-face Networking: 60-second Solutions – - What to do When Your Name is Mispronounced

Image
With a last name like Bjorseth (B-or-seth), you might correctly guess that it has been mispronounced a few times! In fact, only people from areas with a strong Norwegian influence get it correct by just looking at it or hearing it. Frequent attempts include Bah-jor-seth, Bah-jor-sett, Jor-seth, Jor-sett and, then, those that leave even me guessing. As someone who has walked in those shoes, here’s my advice: • Make the other person’s comfort level first and foremost. If asked how to pronounce it, I will do so usually only once. If the person still mispronounces it, I smile and move on. I don’t correct anyone who introduces me at speaking or training engagements unless asked for help by the introducer. • Be sure to say your name slowly and clearly when you meet someone whether it is the first time, second or third. Keep in mind the person may not remember having met you and certainly not how to pronounce an unusual name. • Say your name whenever new ...

The Power of One

The journey is over and the memories have begun to fade.  But the legacy lives on in the film my daughter and I created, when we set out some 3 years ago seeking individuals who were making our world a better place. And indeed, we found many people – ordinary people who were doing extraordinary things. And every one of these people had one thing in common – they had found their purpose in helping others.  The more they gave – the more they got back in return.  But none of them “gave” with the idea of getting something in return. It wasn’t about getting money, favors, recognition, or other ego related pursuits, it was about caring for their “fellow man”. I think that the biggest reward for me in making this film, was sharing that experience with my daughter.  She was fortunate to have been born and raised in a beautiful and privileged part of the world and I wanted her to have a greater global perspective.  It...

5000 Images

Most folks don’t realize that when Erin and I went around the world in pursuit of people creating positive change – we weren’t just shooting a movie – we also shot over 5000 still images. When we planned our itinerary, traveling and shooting on six continents in the summer of 2010, we built in some  “free time” to see the sights.  It also acted as a buffer in case things didn’t go according to plan.  As it happened, everything did go according to plan and we had some wonderful down time in Moscow, Istanbul, Bangkok, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia and India.  We shot still images in all of these destinations in addition to the stills that we shot on the movie set, and ended up with a nice archive. I’ve been editing this archive over the last year and am going to make them available for prints.  You can see the first gallery of images , and there will be more to follow over the next few months.  A print would m...

It’s An Inside Job

Image
“You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.  That is something you have charge of.” – Jim Rohn.  I love irony.  Last month I was interviewed on the On Purpose radio show.  My segment was called, “Take Back Your Life: From Burnout to True Balance.”  We talked about my personal transition five years ago from burnout to a true balanced life.  The joke was, during the interview, I was feeling burnt out. No matter how vigilant we are, burnout can hit us throughout our life.  We do well until a family member becomes ill and we are the primary caretaker.  We love our job, but due to layoffs we become the only one left in our department.  A relationship we thought was stable becomes demanding and draining.  The source of the burnout looks differently but it all comes back to the same issue.  The issue is focusing outside of ourselves instead of in. Percep...

Harnessing the Power of Gratitude-Intention-Affirmation (GIA)

Image
Recently I have been guided to increase, revise and recommit myself to my morning routine.  My practice was slacking a bit and it seemed to be missing some important elements.  Here is my current, recommitted routine.  Every morning for years now, I read the Daily Guide in Science of Mind magazine.  I always find these short articles to be thought provoking.  The messages usually help me start my day with compassion, understanding, and hope.  A new element I have added to my routine is “tapping.”  You may know tapping as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).  Basically it is a physical way to affect our mental programming.  After I have reset my energy and thoughts with tapping, I then meditate.  To rededicate myself to my routine, I have chosen a longer meditation to really ground and connect me.  Next I create my day using the power of GIA – Gratitude, Intention and Affirm...
