Overcoming Depression is Doable

People have a general idea of what depression means. There are many who even see this as part of their everyday lives. Depression is a mental disorder that affects someone’s total conduct. This is manifested through his or her actions and the changes in the way he or she is on a daily basis. This is a medical condition and is therefore beyond a persons control. The fact of the matter is that depression affects the mood, the mind and the body. Once afflicted, a person will have a tough time fighting the illness. This condition is not something that must be taken lightly. When the signs at an early stage are identified, that will be best because it is easier to manage. Severe depression needs professional treatment. It must not be taken for granted because it never heals on its own. Studies have revealed that some depressed people commit suicide when the condition is not treated. Depression does not choose its time and place. It strikes a person any time and at any place. It causes ...

Is Focusing on Your Own Needs and Wants Selfish?

Image
Putting the needs and wants of others before your’s is what is acceptable to society. If you end up putting your own needs and wants before anyone else’s, then you are considered to be selfish. I am sorry, however that belief is what is unacceptable. Am I saying to ignore everyone else’s needs and wants? Not at all. However, think about this. If you give, give and give to everyone else and keep putting your needs and wants last- the reservoir, being you will run out. When that happens, you will start feeling resentful and will end up shutting down. How can you possibly be good for anyone else? Women particularly fall victim to that, especially if they are married and/or have children. Many give of themselves and don’t get much in return. It is one thing to put the needs of the kids’ before the mother’s. However, the mother becomes so used to giving that she will end up putting everyone else’s needs before her’s. That always leads to anger,...

Four Ways to Create a High Quality Instagram Account

Instagram is an image sharing app that you can access from your mobile device or iPad, and this network is growing on a daily basis. Many people are visual by nature, and this is one reason the platform is extremely successful. In fact, I have connected with some great people from Instagram alone, and this platform has helped businesses gain more customers and clients. However, like any tool out there- if not used properly, it won’t help. There are four ways that anyone who wants to create a high quality Instagram profile must use all the time. 1. Be Creative with your Posts . Don’t post the same pictures over and over again. Definitely don’t keep posting images of your meals all the time. Posting your steak dinner or chocolate cake dessert once in a while is fine, however mix it up. Post pic quotes, and you can even create your own quotes and watermark it with your Instagram username. An easy way to create something fun is to go to a royalty free image site such as ht...

Five Ways to Combat Social Media Depression

I have spoken about social media or Facebook depression in the past. In a nutshell, social media depression is when someone is feeling worthless or hopeless by following connections who appear to have a better life. That person makes the comparison between his or her life and their’s and that has a negative affect on his or her emotions. The keyword here is that they appear to have a better life. The reality is that everyone has challenges to deal with, even those connections who make it appear that their lives are so perfect. It is human nature to have a need to share something wonderful or exciting, and that is all they are doing. I can guarantee that everyone has done it as well in the past- regardless of what challenges they may be facing in life. I can understand how this can have a profound affect on people’s lives, however there are steps that can be taken to minimize social media depression. Now let’s talk about you, how does this affect you? Let’s talk ...

An Overview of Death and Grief with Dr. Ivy Margulies

Image
Dealing with death is dificult, and it is very hard when parents pass on, even though this is what is expected to happen one day. However, when a child passes on, the grief experienced by the parents is undescribable. I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Ivy Margulies, who is a funeral director and a certified death midwife, as known as a bereavement doula on Exploring the Eight House . In addition to her private practice, Dr. Ivy Margulies has founded Angels Born Still, specifically focused reproductive maternal mental health. She specializes in infertility and all types of of pregnancy loss including selective termination, abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death. She facilitates several support groups including a miscarriage group, a stillbirth couples group and a pregnancy after loss group. She is the co-facilitator of the global Return to Zero holistic healing retreats at http://www.returntozerohealingretreats.com for women who have had a stillbirth or infant death. D...

Klout will Soon be a Memory

Image
Several years ago, I believed that Klout was extremely important. I saw value in it, while many naysayers expressed how silly it really was. All that did was encourage me to defend it’s “value” even more. However, over time I saw for myself that Klout is nothing other than a silly game . Firstly, the company keeps how the algorithm is calculated a big mystery. They became even more sneaky with this practice after Lithium had acquired it. At the same token, you can artificially increase the score by gaming the system. You can throw garbage onto your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc and arrange to have a slew of likes and comments and that will increase the score. Yet, if you share some content on a regular basis that is valuable that organically receives engagement- your score will likely decrease or stay the same. Why? No one knows except for the folks at Klout. They keep it a secret on purpose. I have stopped looking at people’s Klout scores and I pay more at...

What Uncomfortable Truth I discovered About Myself in 2015

Image
The year 2015 is coming to a close. How was it for you? For me, I had many ah-ha moments and learned a lot. Now, I am definitely not one to look highly upon New Year’s resolutions because more often than not, they are forgotten about by the first week of January. After Christmas, you always see weight loss commercials and it’s quite comical. Many people get pumped up about trying the new diet advertised after gorging themselves during the holidays. By the middle of January, those same people forget about that diet and go back to eating the way they did before. It’s quite predictable. However, I did not write this post to judge anyone. I’m just stating my opinions and observations about common New Year’s resolutions. However, I will share with you what I had learned about myself in 2015, and even well before that- and what I plan to do about it in 2016 and beyond. Since 2014, I found myself extremely bored with my life, disappointed with how my life turned...

An Overview of Grief with Dr. Mekel Harris

Image
On the last episode of Exploring the Eighth House , the topic of grief was spoken about, the process and how it affects us a whole. Because, at some points in our lives, we will be faced with grief which is difficult for everyone to process. I interviewed Dr. Mekel Harris, who is a licensed psychologist and nationally certified health service provider, Associate Professor, community advocate, volunteer, and mentor in Los Angeles, California. In her professional work, Dr. Harris focuses on health and wellness and has a particular interest in providing therapy, consultation, and training in the area of grief and loss. Within the past 5 years, Dr. Harris has presented at several national and international conferences, focused on sharing her expertise in grief and loss, including end-of-life care with children diagnosed with life-limiting conditions. Most recently, she traveled to Spain for international conference presentation, and in May 2016, she will travel to Argentina to discuss ta...

Stereotyping People with Depression and Mental Illness

Image
The terrorist attacks that just recently happened in France shook people up around the world, just like in all other previous cases of terrorism being involved. People have been understandably angry about what occurred, such as myself. However, there has been a lot of stereotyping of Muslims. I’ve been noticing a lot of unfair comments about how “all Muslims are terrorists”, just like there were after previous attacks of terrorism. The stereotyping was even worse after the 9/11 attacks. Calling all Muslims “terrorists” is wrong and uncalled for because there are many people who are part of the Islamic faith that are peaceful and are very much against terrorism. There is also a lot of stereotyping of people who have depression and mental illness which needs to come to an end. I will list the common stereotypes that you hear about people that have depression and/or other mental illnesses. 1. They are nutcases . People who have mental illness of any kind are...

Acceptance of Death

Image
I have written many blog posts on depression and mental health. I am going to move away from that in this post and focus on another aspect of life that many of us shun, which is death. Many of us have a difficult time accepting death, however, it does not have to be difficult. The acceptance of death is easier than you may think. After all, who doesn’t realize they are eventually going to die? The problem lies in fully accepting death and in being comfortable in talking about dying with those we love. When you are approaching the sensitive issues surrounding death with family members and loved ones can be a loving way to help everyone prepare for the eventual death of a loved one. Most of the time, families may have a hard time accepting death. They tend to avoid discussing medical problems and chronic illnesses until they are forced, by circumstances, to face up to it. However, it is much healthier to talk about the family’s feelings about the illness or eventual death of...

How Social Media can have a Negative Impact on People with Mental Illness

Image
The use of social media can be useful when it comes to reaching out to others, making new discoveries and building strong networks. It can be advantageous for your business, as well as connecting with new and old friends. I have talked about the advantages of social media in many previous blog posts. However, if not used properly, it can lead to danger. Unfortunately, many people who are not being treated for mental illness are prone to misusing social media. They can end up falling into dangerous traps as a result. I will list some of the dangers. 1. The Risk of Isolation is Higher . If you are dealing with mental illnesses such as depression, you will have a tendency to withdraw. When you isolate yourself from others, you will likely use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc as a substitute for human contact. Excessive use of social media for this purpose especially can create further isolation and can worsen depression. 2. Increases Avoidance and Procrastination . There are always tas...

I Suffer From Depression and Not Going to Hide it

Image
I have been on hiatus for a while. I needed time to collect my thoughts and change around my site. I lost traffic and interest over the past month but that is okay. I needed that time to evaluate things and now that I have done that, I know what to do. I stopped doing my podcasts. I felt there was no more room in my life for them. It served its purpose at the time. Not anymore. I will write the occasional post on social media. However, I will mostly be writing posts about depression, mental health, grief and death, and anything else that I decide to write about. Is that depressing? No because it is reality of life. It is time to stop hiding from all of that. I felt that only focusing on writing posts that are business and social media related wasn’t allowing me to really express who I am. I lost passion in this site because of that. It all started feeling like a lie. Keeping up with the blog felt like a chore, not something I was passionate about. That is not how it should have ...

Spreading the Influence with Felicia Streeter

I had an awesome guest today on Getting Social with Miriam . Before I get into who it was, I want to add that many business owners are struggling to make even a little bit of a profit and I can understand their pain. I have definitely been there. Heck we all have. Due to their struggles, they become filled with doubts and angst. As a result, the vicious cycle of working hard and surviving continues, and that ends up bringing in a lot of frustration and unhappiness. It is a huge self esteem killer. My guest who I had on today, Felicia Streeter, helps women entrepreneurs and couples in business succeed by shifting your money mindset to increasing your income, accelerating your results, and having more awesome clients to make your business thrive. She’s all about being the Visionary and Thinking Bigger and how everything flows seamlessly in your business.
