How am I supposed to be Grateful?

Image
Okay, I’m stuck in bed in excruciating pain.  The doctor said, “Take these pills for pain and take these pills to sleep. Do these exercises for back problems and you’ll be fine.”  Then she handed me two prescriptions and a pamphlet with the exercises. I was unable to drive, unable to stand for more than a couple minutes and my pain level was so high that breathing sent sharp pains through my body.  The pain medication did nothing for me. The sleeping pills did help me sleep. However, they caused me to wake up feeling like I was hit by a truck. I tried to do what exercises I could. How on Earth was I supposed to be thankful and believe that this is God’s will? Since laying in bed was my number one activity there wasn’t much I could do.  It was 1998/1999.  I had no internet, let alone a smart phone.  I did have a television in my bedroom with a VCR and I was able to read.  At that time, I was a member of “One Spi...

Question Everything.

Image
One of the overwhelmingly apparent habits of high achievers is their insatiable curiosity. They question everything. They don’t just want an answer. They want the explanation behind the answer. They want the research behind the explanation behind the answer. They aren’t satisfied to believe what other people tell them. They own their facts. They know what they believe. And why they believe it. It’s important. And often overlooked. In the busyness of your daily schedule, it is easy to just accept the answers that someone else gives you. It’s easy to mimic the formulas that seem to be making someone else successful. The danger there is that you never truly understand what works for you. You never figure out the secret power you bring to the battle that no one else can exactly replicate. You’re too busy copying someone else’s battle plan that is built around their secret power. You’re trying to be like them and will l...

Just Do One Thing That Matters.

Image
You don’t have to get all the way there. But you do have to get started moving that direction. The problem with accomplishing big goals is that you often allow yourself to be tricked into thinking that you need to apply massive amounts of  effort over a short period of time in order to be successful. Steady progress is your greatest weapon. You need to build momentum. Build it. Keep it. Grow it. And ultimately, leverage it. Momentum is just a series of small steps applied with consistency. Day by day by day. It’s not a burst of massive energy over a few days. It’s an ongoing commitment to doing a little bit better each day than yesterday until you get  to where you want to be. What does that mean? It means you make one healthier food choice each day. It means you invest the time each day to build one stronger relationship. It means you trade one of your favorite TV shows to read a book that could help you. It means that you stand more and do one sma...

52 Behaviors Of Highly Successful People.

Image
They don’t rationalize or trivialize failure — and stop themselves when they are tempted to make excuses. They have an off switch. They know how to enjoy the moment, relax, and enjoy what they have in their life already. They don’t confuse their job with their identity They are more interested in getting things done than they are in doing things that are easy. They make every effort to finish what they start — even when it costs them more than seems reasonable. They practice what they preach. They are comfortable with new and different, even though it’s scary at times. They work to stay in shape personally — eating smart and exercising. They are vigorously effective — stay busy, productive and thinking ahead. They associate themselves with like-minded people. They understand the importance of building great teams and win-win relationships. They are ambitious and driven — they want to be awesome and work to ach...

Choose Better.

Image
Everything is a choice. You have limitless decisions. They range from the insane to the mundane. You get to decide when you get up in the morning and when you go to bed, if you go to the office and what time you leave to get there. You could walk or drive or run, skip, crawl, or hitchhike to work. What you eat each day is a choice. How you handle criticism, how hard you work, and if you tell the whole truth — these are all choices that you will make today. Thousands of options. Thousands of decisions you get to make. Most of them you won’t even think about. You’ll do whatever comes naturally or whatever seems to cause the least resistance with those around you. Some decisions will take time to think about. You’ll prepare and plan and ponder. The small stuff — like how much water you drink each day or how much sleep you get each night — you’ll most likely ignore. You’re too busy scoping out the big decisions. Never forget the big successes ...

The Rest Of The Days.

Image
Some days all the pieces just fall into place. Making deals seems easy. Your conversations are inspired. The pieces of the puzzle fit into place without much of a fight. Those are the days you want every day. Where you are seeing the rainbows and enjoying the sunset. But those days don’t come easily. They are the result of the rest of your days — where nothing seems easy, inspired, or the least bit enjoyable. The days where you’re not really sure it’s worth it. The days where you’re working hard and not seeing any results. The days where smart people tell you what you’re doing isn’t going to be successful. Those are the days you have to endure to get to the moments when everything feels right. When things fall into place. That’s important to remember when you can’t see rainbows and aren’t sure the sun will come up again. Your moment of triumph will come as long as you’re willing to keep working. Disregard the critics. Ign...

Take The Next Step.

Image
You can only go as far as you’re willing to take the next step. That’s the secret to breakthrough. Moving forward just a little bit more. Every day. In every way. Just another step. But that step is important. It stands for progress and your potential to achieve the goals you have set out for yourself. No audacious challenge is accomplished quickly, easily, or without setbacks. The biggest challenge of all is figuring out where to get started. What to do. Where to go. What you actually want. Unless you’re deliberate about forward progress you’ll find yourself spinning in circles. Doing enough to appear like you’re living a meaningful existence, but doing absolutely nothing that truly matters. It’s deceiving to you and everyone else that watches you work. You think you’re being awesome because you’re busy. You think you’re changing the world because you’re moving. You’re just not moving towards where you need to be. What y...

Start Trying To Fail.

Image
There’s always more you can do. There’s always more focus you can bring to managing your priorities. More effort you can bring to getting things done. More money you can invest in realizing your dream. More ways to win. More urgency. More intensity. You have it. It’s inside you. And all around you. You just don’t know how to get to it. Until something bad happens — then you somehow find a way to tap into the extra reserve. You find a way when the stakes are high enough. You get more creative. More inspired. More purposeful. Somehow, against the odds, you get better when things get really, really bad. You don’t give up and fall apart. You find a way through the obstacles standing in your way. The bigger the challenge, the better you get at figuring it out. But that only happens a few times in your life. Most of the time you just let life take you where it wants to go. You make excuses. Blame other people. Whine. Whimper. Wish things were different. All...

Being Better Than Best.

Image
If you want to be the best, you have to be better than the best. But how do you get better when you’re already doing your best right now and there are other people better than you? You’re already telling people that you’re giving 110%. That you are “all in” all the way. You’re committed, driven, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals and improve. Usually those are just words. Empty words. Nice aspirations. And fanciful devotion. But usually just words. You aren’t really willing to do what it takes to be the best. You just want to look respectable. Being the best looks quite a bit different than giving a lot, doing a lot, and hoping a lot. It demands that you put yourself in the horribly uncomfortable position of losing to other people. Being the best demands that you deliberately seek out competitors who are already better than you. No one wants to do that. Especially when you have already worked brutally hard to ac...

If You’re Not Last, You’re First.

Image
Success isn’t a moment in time. It’s a process. It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to achieve — being successful takes focus, planning, and commitment. Along the way to succeeding you’re going to fail. You’re going to fail a lot. You’re going to try to accomplish you goal and come short. It’s not life ending, career ending, or goal ending. Just a part of your evolution from where you are now to where you need to be. It’s why we call it a journey. Not a destination. Which is why your mindset matters. It matters more than anything. How you look at temporary failure is a good indication of how likely you are to be massively successful. Or not. If you’re more concerned about saving face then pushing yourself beyond what is comfortable, you’ll never achieve the level of success that’s possible for you. If you view failure as an opportunity to test yourself against better competition or a chance to learn what area...

They Can’t Help You.

Image
That other person that looks successful and is telling you they have all the answers probably can’t help you the way you think they can. They don’t have the answers to your problems. They might have a answer to a problem that they solved for themselves or someone else — but there’s no guarantee that your problem is something that they can fix. It’s important you realize that as soon as possible. Just because you feel more stuck than they appear to be doesn’t mean that you need their help. Or that you can unstick yourself by paying them for their help. That’s the irony of other people’s success. It all looks better in hindsight. Your situation always feels worse than it actually is. What makes your situation truly bad is when you panic and foolishly pay other people to do what only you can do for yourself. It’s going to take some time to fix your situation. It’s not going to be easy, cheap, or pretty. It’s going to take yo...

You Think You’re Disciplined, But You’re Not.

Image
You’re not disciplined because you do some of the things that need to be done. You’re not disciplined because you do the same things each day. You’re not disciplined because you get up on time, go to work on time, or get things done on time. The hard truth about discipline is that repetition isn’t the same as practice, excellence, and focused determination. Superstar athletes and high-performance business executives share the same ability to maniacally develop improvements in their own abilities, no matter how good they already are. That’s where discipline comes in. It’s easy to do what’s easy. It’s natural to do more of the things that you’re automatically good at. But doing more of what you’re already good at isn’t going to lead to any new breakthroughs. You won’t be awesome by doing the same old things you’ve been doing before. It takes discipline to practice improving that one skill that makes you feel unc...

Finding Your Way Back When You Feel Lost.

Image
One of the most hopeless feelings in the world is feeling lost. That sense that you’ve lost your way. Going somewhere but not sure where or why or if you actually want to be where you end up. If you aren’t there right now, you’re guaranteed to be there soon. It’s a challenge that plagues all of us. You were born looking for purpose. You cried and struggled and failed your way to figuring things out. You didn’t know enough to even consider that you might have limits. Before you could run, you walked. Before you could walk, you crawled. Before you could crawl, you grabbed whatever was closest to you and pulled yourself up until you fell back over again. Every day was a new learning experience. Developing new muscles — intellectual, emotional, and physical. Your way was everywhere, doing everything. You wanted it all. And tried it all. But then something began to undermine your grand exploration towards greatness. You begin to realize that...

That Something Is You

Image
You can be anything you want to be as long as you are willing to be something different than you are right now. You can’t be better and still do the same mediocre activities that make you good enough right now. You can’t evolve, expand, and take your game to the next level if you’re not willing to dramatically change what you do. You have to change before change happens. Deliberate, uncomfortable change. Not different excuses. Not better reasons. Not new ideas, easier challenges, or trendy schemes. Real change. You have to do the hard things that you’re not doing right now. On a schedule. Each day. Bit by bit by bit. Not all at once. Not one sprint towards the finish line. Continual, obsessive progress. If you want to achieve something you have never had before, you must do something you have never done before. And then keep doing it. Until it works. That’s the secret to living a life without limits. That’s the answer to your struggle to lead bet...
