Overcoming Depression is Doable

People have a general idea of what depression means. There are many who even see this as part of their everyday lives. Depression is a mental disorder that affects someone’s total conduct. This is manifested through his or her actions and the changes in the way he or she is on a daily basis. This is a medical condition and is therefore beyond a persons control. The fact of the matter is that depression affects the mood, the mind and the body. Once afflicted, a person will have a tough time fighting the illness. This condition is not something that must be taken lightly. When the signs at an early stage are identified, that will be best because it is easier to manage. Severe depression needs professional treatment. It must not be taken for granted because it never heals on its own. Studies have revealed that some depressed people commit suicide when the condition is not treated. Depression does not choose its time and place. It strikes a person any time and at any place. It causes ...

Is Focusing on Your Own Needs and Wants Selfish?

Image
Putting the needs and wants of others before your’s is what is acceptable to society. If you end up putting your own needs and wants before anyone else’s, then you are considered to be selfish. I am sorry, however that belief is what is unacceptable. Am I saying to ignore everyone else’s needs and wants? Not at all. However, think about this. If you give, give and give to everyone else and keep putting your needs and wants last- the reservoir, being you will run out. When that happens, you will start feeling resentful and will end up shutting down. How can you possibly be good for anyone else? Women particularly fall victim to that, especially if they are married and/or have children. Many give of themselves and don’t get much in return. It is one thing to put the needs of the kids’ before the mother’s. However, the mother becomes so used to giving that she will end up putting everyone else’s needs before her’s. That always leads to anger,...

Five Ways to Combat Social Media Depression

I have spoken about social media or Facebook depression in the past. In a nutshell, social media depression is when someone is feeling worthless or hopeless by following connections who appear to have a better life. That person makes the comparison between his or her life and their’s and that has a negative affect on his or her emotions. The keyword here is that they appear to have a better life. The reality is that everyone has challenges to deal with, even those connections who make it appear that their lives are so perfect. It is human nature to have a need to share something wonderful or exciting, and that is all they are doing. I can guarantee that everyone has done it as well in the past- regardless of what challenges they may be facing in life. I can understand how this can have a profound affect on people’s lives, however there are steps that can be taken to minimize social media depression. Now let’s talk about you, how does this affect you? Let’s talk ...

Five Ways You Can Keep a Genuine and Professional Social Media Presence

Many business owners are concerned about keeping their social media presence so professional that they end up turning out to appear non-personal or fake. Some unintentionally brag often about their success because they are proud. It is one thing to stay positive and inspiring on social media as people are attracted to that. However, like anything else in life, do so in moderation. There is a point when this practice becomes insincere and others begin to notice. Once that happens, your tribe that you worked hard to build will start to fall away. You will be seen as an insincere braggart which is just as bad as being a negative Nancy. I don’t encourage anyone to start being negative on social media either. What I encourage is for users to be genuine. Be personal. Be real, and here are four ways to do that. 1. Mention your Previous Failures Once in a While . The fact of the matter is, there is a lot of social media envy around. If all you ever do is brag about your successes, people ...

Klout will Soon be a Memory

Image
Several years ago, I believed that Klout was extremely important. I saw value in it, while many naysayers expressed how silly it really was. All that did was encourage me to defend it’s “value” even more. However, over time I saw for myself that Klout is nothing other than a silly game . Firstly, the company keeps how the algorithm is calculated a big mystery. They became even more sneaky with this practice after Lithium had acquired it. At the same token, you can artificially increase the score by gaming the system. You can throw garbage onto your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc and arrange to have a slew of likes and comments and that will increase the score. Yet, if you share some content on a regular basis that is valuable that organically receives engagement- your score will likely decrease or stay the same. Why? No one knows except for the folks at Klout. They keep it a secret on purpose. I have stopped looking at people’s Klout scores and I pay more at...

What Uncomfortable Truth I discovered About Myself in 2015

Image
The year 2015 is coming to a close. How was it for you? For me, I had many ah-ha moments and learned a lot. Now, I am definitely not one to look highly upon New Year’s resolutions because more often than not, they are forgotten about by the first week of January. After Christmas, you always see weight loss commercials and it’s quite comical. Many people get pumped up about trying the new diet advertised after gorging themselves during the holidays. By the middle of January, those same people forget about that diet and go back to eating the way they did before. It’s quite predictable. However, I did not write this post to judge anyone. I’m just stating my opinions and observations about common New Year’s resolutions. However, I will share with you what I had learned about myself in 2015, and even well before that- and what I plan to do about it in 2016 and beyond. Since 2014, I found myself extremely bored with my life, disappointed with how my life turned...

Whatever you do, Never Buy into The Secret

Image
Anyone who is unhappy with his or her life will want to find ways to improve it and to make it better. This especially rings true for those who suffer from depression and other mental illnesses. Most would be desperate enough to try anything to escape the living hell they are living. I know that is the case because I have tried it and now I am full of regrets. However, at least I now have the opportunity to save others who are thinking of doing the same thing from falling for something that is too good to be true . In 2006, The Secret , written by Rhonda Byrne became very popular. Burne stated if you visualized the thing you wanted the most hard enough and consistently, it would be yours! The author also stated if you only think positive thoughts, only positive things will happen to you. It was also mentioned that any kind of negative thinking would come back at you. In other words, never allow one negative thought to go through your head. And if you are a victim of any kind of traum...

Stereotyping People with Depression and Mental Illness

Image
The terrorist attacks that just recently happened in France shook people up around the world, just like in all other previous cases of terrorism being involved. People have been understandably angry about what occurred, such as myself. However, there has been a lot of stereotyping of Muslims. I’ve been noticing a lot of unfair comments about how “all Muslims are terrorists”, just like there were after previous attacks of terrorism. The stereotyping was even worse after the 9/11 attacks. Calling all Muslims “terrorists” is wrong and uncalled for because there are many people who are part of the Islamic faith that are peaceful and are very much against terrorism. There is also a lot of stereotyping of people who have depression and mental illness which needs to come to an end. I will list the common stereotypes that you hear about people that have depression and/or other mental illnesses. 1. They are nutcases . People who have mental illness of any kind are...

Exploring the Eighth House

Image
Topics such as mental illness, death and anything that is considered to be taboo is always shoved under the rug. That is why it is taboo. It is time that these uncomfortable parts of life are brought out. I am organizing a new podcast called Exploring the Eighth House and there will be no set time as far as when it airs. The Eighth House in astrology is the area in your astrological chart that is ruled by the sign Scorpio, and is the area that governs these uncomfortable facts of life. In fact, this house is known to be the “house of sex”, but sex is only a part of what it represents. Psychology, death, other people’s stuff, debt, investments and secrets are what this house also rules. In other words, whenever you are dealing with the Eighth House, you are dealing with heavy duty stuff that make others squirm. Stay tuned for upcoming podcasts of me interviewing psychologists, grief counselors, funeral directors, and other interesting individuals that would focus on ...

How Social Media can have a Negative Impact on People with Mental Illness

Image
The use of social media can be useful when it comes to reaching out to others, making new discoveries and building strong networks. It can be advantageous for your business, as well as connecting with new and old friends. I have talked about the advantages of social media in many previous blog posts. However, if not used properly, it can lead to danger. Unfortunately, many people who are not being treated for mental illness are prone to misusing social media. They can end up falling into dangerous traps as a result. I will list some of the dangers. 1. The Risk of Isolation is Higher . If you are dealing with mental illnesses such as depression, you will have a tendency to withdraw. When you isolate yourself from others, you will likely use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc as a substitute for human contact. Excessive use of social media for this purpose especially can create further isolation and can worsen depression. 2. Increases Avoidance and Procrastination . There are always tas...

Time to End the Stigma of Mental Challenges Like Depression

Image
Today is Mental Health Awareness Day. Mental illness and depression are misunderstood and heavily stigmatized by society. Mental illness is no different than a physical illness. You know this, everyone knows this! However the stigma has prevented many people from taking this illness very seriously. What I did is I created an Aha Book on mental illness and depression called Time to End the Stigma of Mental Challenges Like Depression . This book has 140 Ahas of tips and tweets that state facts about depression that I had written up, as well as information on how to help yourself while recovering from mental illness. Of course writing these quotes and tips required me to do some research on self help tips for depression, as well as studying statistics. Some of these tips I found to be useful for myself too. In other words, this research was for my benefit too. None of these tips are meant to cure depression or mental illness. However, for those who are suffering from it need to find way...
